Mathematics Leadership Institute
Three departments at Rice University (Mathematics, Computational & Applied Mathematics and Statistics) collaborated to create a professional development model for developing secondary school teacher leaders in mathematics. Activities were developed to nurture the intellectual curiosity and stimulate the teaching repertoire of high school mathematics teachers.

The program consists of a summer leadership institute and academic-year activities. During the summer program teachers attend two four-week summer sessions designed to improve their mathematical knowledge, pedagogy, and understanding of current research in mathematics education and to develop leadership and adult education skills. The academic-year activities during the school day see the lead teachers working with all high school mathematics teachers while activities outside the school day are aimed at supporting further development of the roles of the teacher leaders within their school buildings.
