Focus on Function
Understanding complex systems is an essential component of science literacy and is important in promoting comprehension of how many real-world phenomena operate. This article discusses Structure-Behavior-Function thinking to help students think deeply, systematically and with an orientation that will help them learn and more fully understand about
complex systems. The research explored, and the article subsequently presents, a practical example
of how this thinking can be promoted using an aquarium as an ecosystem model.
